Acknowledge Your Concern
It’s understandable to be irrational in voicing your thoughts. Especially if it’s a matter of health safety, many of us tend to get vocal. But here, a little empathy can work wonders.
Before acknowledging your concern, identify if the said individual:
- Is medically compromised.
- Can buy face breathers.
- Has a fear of shutting down their airway.
If none of the above tallies, voice your concern politely while highlighting the benefits they can add by covering themselves with appropriate face gear.
-
Don’t Shame Publicly
While approaching individuals who refuse to wear face respirators, you have to keep one thing in mind: public shaming is not the right way to alter someone’s behavior.
If anything, it can worsen the way a person feels, making them rebellious about their non-wearing stance.
-
Ask Them to Maintain Social Boundary
Even after getting your message across, it’s highly likely that such individuals won’t budge. In such cases, the least yet effective measure you can do is ask them to maintain social distance.
If it’s someone you know, you can easily ask them to interact via text or call. Tell them that your ‘social interaction circle’ includes only those who follow CDC-approved guidelines.
And if it’s someone you don’t know, you can ask them to step back. If they refuse, you can implement it yourself by maintaining a six-foot distance.
The best option here: leave the spot and save yourself the trouble of interacting with individuals who don’t understand the significance of wearing face breathers in public.

Reach Out to Authorities if Needed
While shopping down the aisle, you might see people wearing face respirators inappropriately or not at all.
One way to effective implementation is by reaching out to the authorities.
In a shop, that means approaching the manager.
If you’re a business owner and see your employees disobeying the general workplace rules, you can use your authority and ask them to leave.
Because when it’s about health safety, businesses only thrive when given in the hands of rule-abiding individuals.

Keep Face Breathers at Hand to Offer
You might think that it’s costly to have excess face breathers with yourself.
But not when you encounter such individuals.
Given any reason, they might feel uncomfortable wearing respirators. Or the hefty costs some manufacturers put on their respirators may prevent them from buying.
Here, initiating a kind gesture like offering them a face breather not only eases your concerns but reduces the major risk of cross-infection, too.
